Minute book, 1825-1828, for the Virginia branch of the American Colonization Society, later the Colonization Society of Virginia (1828- 1859), providing information about the philosophy and benefits of emigration, the choice of Africa versus Haiti as a destination, the status of the free black population in society, "civilizing" and evangelizing Africa, propriety of allowing convicts to emigrate, providing the colony with farm implements, health and schooling, establishment of military organization and government, trade and commercial activity in the colony, discussion of the potential economic and moral effects of the eradication of the slave trade, southern patriotism, denunciation of abolitionists, legislation concerning freedmen and emigration costs, national unity, the colony of "New Virginia," Liberian independence, and colonization as a social and political necessity. Account book, 1849-1858, of the Colonization Society of Virginia records income from subscriptions and donations by private individuals and church congregations and expenses such as salaries for the society's agents, travel expenses for the society's delegates, printing expenses for the Virginia Colonizationist and other publications, and emigration expenses.

Established November 4, 1823, as an auxiliary to the American Colonization Society, to provide and organize resources for the free black population of Virginia who desired to emigrate. In December 1828 the members of the auxiliary resolved to become the Colonization Society of Virginia, separate from the parent society, for the purpose of providing funds for those who voluntarily chose to emigrate to Liberia.
